Jeff Tincher - Head Trainer

Jeff T. is the co- founder and a Head Trainer at CrossFit Fairfax. Back in January 2006, Coach Greg Glassman asked Jeff to start an Affiliate in the Northern Va area. He asked Maggie to be his partner, and that is how CrossFit Fairfax was born.

Jeff is a Certified Level 3 Crossfit Trainer and a member of CrossFit Headquarters Traveling Level I Certification Training Staff. Jeff has been a personal trainer for over 6 years and been doing CrossFit workouts since January 2005. Jeff has competed in the 2008 and 2009 CrossFit Games, placing 5th overall in the Men's category (out of 196 male athletes) in 2008. He is also the "mastermind" behind all CrossFit Fairfax WODs!

Jeff is a full-time Firefighter for Fairfax County Fire & Rescue. He was a member of the Fire Departments Peer Fitness Trainers until becoming aggravated with their archaic views on what Fitness is and their lack of willingness to change. He hopes one day that Fairfax Fire will join the other Fire Departments around the world and convert their PT program to CrossFit also. The injury rate for long distance running (a staple of the Fairfax Fire's PT Program) far exceeds the injury rate of CrossFit.

"Ignorance and the unwillingness to learn the movements correctly is dangerous - not CrossFit. These movements are how our bodies were designed to function. When was the last time you had to do a Lateral Raise in a real life situation? Never is the answer. When was the last time you did a deadlift or squat in a real life situation? Everyday is the answer (try getting out of a chair, off the toilet, or picking something up without squatting or dead lifting). If you can't do a full range of motion squat (crease of hip coming below the knee, weight on heels, knees tracking over the feet, with an upright torso) - you are broken and on a one way path to ending up in a Nursing Home."

"I was introduced to Crossfit in 2005 by my partner JeffT and I was instantly hooked. I used to be one of those “gym rats” that spent hours in the gym. I thought I was in pretty good shape, but my first WOD proved me wrong… and once I got the taste of that intensity, I couldn’t go back to the globo gym….I only wish I had found Crossfit 10 years ago! The fitness gains and improvements I have made during the past couple of years have been tremendous. Crossfit has definitely made me a better athlete. I love training and sharing my knowledge. But the satisfaction of knowing that I’m helping others get fit and healthier is what motivates every day! I look forward to sharing my experience as a Crossfit athlete and affiliate owner with others."

Our Level I Staff:

Julie Helm

Julie Helm, a mother of four and a lifetime fitness enthusiast, is a Level 1 certified CrossFit trainer who has received her Kettlebell and Olympic Weightlifting certifications.  Julie is in the process of training to earn her Level 2 certification.  She has enjoyed competitive sports since the age of six -- participating in everything from basketball and volleyball to track and swimming.  After graduation, Julie became very involved in Kickboxing -- finding the results of the sport to be tremendously rewarding.  Just when she thought she'd found her 'exercise for life' in Kickboxing, she was introduced to CrossFit - the key to what she admits has put her in the best shape of her life. Julie, her husband Charlie and their four children have made Crossfit a family affair.  You can also find Julie at the gym on Saturday mornings where she coaches the 'Crossfit Kids'.

Julie Colby

Julie is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer and a Fairfax County Fire Fighter.  She found a passion for weightlifting and aerobics at age 14 when she discovered, "Body Shaping by Cory Everson".  The former Ms. Olympia, showed Julie that women can be strong, fit, and beautiful. After taking every fitness class at the community college and working as a personal trainer at a large Globo gym, life threw some curve balls and she was out of the industry for many years. In May of 2007, Julie's sister-in-law finally convinced her to try CrossFit, and she was hooked.  The strength, confidence and abilities she has obtained through CrossFit gave her the confidence, at age 34, to become a Fire Fighter.  "Crossfit changes your entire outlook on life. Every new challenge you face is just an opportunity to add a new Bitch to your list, and your goal is to cross one off".

Sarah Ellis

Sarah joined CrossFit Fairfax in June of 2007, with the intent of supplementing her rugby training.  Since that time she has continued to pursue various CrossFit endeavors including her level one certification and competing in the 2008 CrossFit Games.

When not at CrossFit, Sarah enjoys playing rugby with the Northern Virginia Women's Rugby Club, volleyball, mountain biking and traveling.  She comes to CrossFit Fairfax with  rugby and volleyball coaching experince.  In addition, Sarah works as a registered nurse/paramedic with Phi AirCare Medevac and she teaches for the INOVA Health System.

Mike Vorgang

Mike has been a Level 1 certified trainer since July 2007 and is a former coach at CrossFit Quantico.  He came to CrossFit Fairfax in June 2009 after serving for eight years as a United States Marine Corps Infantry Officer.  Finding CrossFit through the Marine Corps, Mike instantly became hooked on the intensity of the workouts.  After using CrossFit as his primary means of physical training for six months, he went on his final deployment to Iraq where he noticed a huge increase in his phyical capacity.  His ability to carry heavy weight for longer distances, quicker, and without feeling fatigued had increased exponentially.  He quickly came to the realization that nothing could prepare him better for the rigors of combat than CrossFit, and became an avid athlete and coach.  Having since left the active duty Marine Corps, Mike is now employed by Segovia Global IP Services.  He has a wife Cassie, a daughter Kailey, and two dogs.

Craig Furneisen

Like the majority of people everywhere, I was pretty happy with my current training methods and thought I was in good physical condition.  Then one day my good friend JeffT found a new program called Crossfit and everything changed!  J.T. and Maggie began traning together and started Crossfit Fairfax.  Over the course of the next year and quite a few phone calls later a certain comment from Maggie finally got me into the gym in January 2007, where she put me through 20 minutes of pure torture...... I was hooked!  Over the next few months I became increasingly more involved in training and before I knew it I was headed for a cert and became a Crossfit Level 1 trainer in November 2007. Crossfit has not only helped me excell in my job as Fairfax County Firefighter but also in everyday life.  I have Crossfit to thank for helping to recover from not only a broken left foot in July 2007 but a torn ACL, on the same leg, two months later.  Through Crossfit I am now stronger and faster than before these injuries even though the so called doctors and experts said not to keep doing the workouts.  Done correctly though all excercises are safe and enjoy I the coaching aspect helping to ensure the clients accomplish this.

Gordo Limb

Gordo came to CF Fairfax from Lightning CrossFit in summer of 2009.  He has been CrossFitting since 2005 and was certified Level 1 in 2006.  He also holds CrossFit Kids, Gymnastics, Kettlebell, Basic Barbell, and Science of Exercise certifications and is USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach Certified.  An active duty Marine who has a wife and two kids, Gordo helps part time, especially with the CF Kids program.
